For Day 2 of National Wildlife Week, we are diving deep beneath the waves. While the American Black Bear rules the forest, the Sea Turtle is the undisputed king of the open ocean.

Imagine traveling thousands of miles across the trackless ocean and finding your way back to the exact same beach where you were born. Sea turtles do it using the Earth's magnetic field! They have internal "biological compasses" that allow them to navigate the globe with better accuracy than most high-tech boat equipment.
In line with our "Wildlife in Living Color" theme, a sea turtle’s shell (or carapace) is a work of art. But those ambers, greens, and browns aren't just for show.
Countershading: From above, their dark shell blends into the murky depths.
Light Underbellies: From below, their pale underside blends into the bright, sunlit surface of the water. It’s the ultimate camouflage suit for a life spent on the move.
Sea turtles play a massive role in keeping our oceans healthy. Green Sea Turtles, for example, graze on seagrass beds. By "mowing" the grass, they keep it short and healthy, which provides a vital nursery for fish, shellfish, and crustaceans. Without the turtles, the "lawns" of the ocean would become overgrown and eventually die off.
While they spend their lives underwater, sea turtles are air-breathing reptiles. They can hold their breath for several hours depending on their activity level. When they are resting or sleeping, they can stay submerged for 4 to 7 hours! However, when they are stressed or active, they need to surface much more frequently.
The life of a sea turtle is a story of incredible resilience. From the moment they hatch and scramble toward the moonlit surf, they face predators at every turn. It is estimated that only 1 in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings survives to adulthood. This makes every adult turtle we see a true champion of survival—and a reminder of why protecting our beaches and oceans is so critical.
